As you may recall from a previous post, the twins did the Intro to Hockey camp a few weeks ago. Jenner only participated in half of the sessions of that camp. Both times he was out there, he had a huge smile on his face and loved it. When the evaluation camp started, he refused to go out on the ice. We even had big brother go out there to make him feel more comfortable. That didn't work. Last Thursday, Jenner said he hated hockey and wasn't going to do it.
Jace, on the other hand, is in love with the sport. Jace skates like he handles the rest of life...a million miles an hour! Jace tries to skate so fast that he, of course, falls because he's out of control. Jace can't wait to get on the ice. I think he might be the fastest skater of the boys when they get older, which would be no surprise.
On Friday afternoon, I picked up the twins early and headed to a rink that had open skate. Just me and the twins. There were five other people on the ice so it was pretty empty. I took their hockey gear. I got Jace dressed and he headed out to the ice. I put on my skates to join him and Jenner, who still refused to go out there, asked me who was going to watch him while he sat on the bench. I shrugged my shoulders. He then asked to get his skates on. I was able to get Jenner on the ice! Here is proof.
And Jace still going as fast as ever.
When open-skating was over, both boys refused to get off the ice. No one came to kick us out, so we skated for an extra 30 minutes.
The next day was the final day of the eval camp. Jenner, in his own sense of stubborn-ness, refused to go out there. He had a blast the day before but didn't want to go out there the next day. I'm not sure what happened, but he finally consented and got on the ice.
On Sunday, Jenner kept asking if he could go to open skate, which was being held that evening at 7pm. I told him that we could go but it wouldn't be until after supper. All day long, Jenner kept asking when we could go. Finally the time arrived. We had all 3 boys, myself, and even Latana got on the ice on a pair of skates for the first time!
Jenner's skating has already improved in the three days he was on the ice this weekend. Latana's skating improved in just an hour!
I'm hoping that we're over the stubborn-ness that Jenner has been exhibiting and that he'll have a fun season. I have no worries about Chay or Jace.
I watched Chay during his last day of eval camp and he is now showing a willingness to be more aggressive, in a good way. And he looks stronger on the puck. In his early years, he'd get touched and fall down. On Saturday, he was carrying the puck to the net while being bumped by other skaters. He only had one goal in the game he played, but he looked strong in lots of areas of his game.
Teams are announced today and the season starts, officially, this weekend. I'm sure that as a family, we'll be seeing lots of ice time this year. Between the boys playing hockey and going to Sioux games, we will also have to find time to go to the outdoor rink across the street once it gets cold enough to make ice.
